May 1 Celebration

May 1 has a deep background in Denmark. It used to be Great Prayer Day in Denmark, in which the King combined all of the superfluous religious holidays into one on May 1. That is why the country gets the working day off, but it is no longer religious. Yet, it has become synonymous with workers' rights. Every year there are workers speeches advocating for fair wages for the working class on May 1. There are several places to celebrate May 1 in Copenhagen, and they all have a different atmosphere. Some are very politically oriented, some are for families, some are at the beach, and others are for young people to get drunk and sit in a park. I guess the park would have to do.

It was raining that morning, and continued on to when we went into the city to celebrate. While we were waiting for friends to get ready in their apartment, the sun actually came out and cleared away the rain clouds. It turned out to be a lovely afternoon, and I spent it meeting new friends. I also happened to run into some old friends in the park by chance! Thousands of people showed up to Fælledparken to enjoy the day and even the Prime Minister showed up to give a speech.
